Review of: Williams, God's Own Party

Review of: Williams, God's Own Party:

What this reviewer fails to discover is the Bible is the Book for revelation and spirituality. Many of these "Southern Evangelicals" are bigots and racists. What Bible are they reading? What Jesus are they following? The Southern Evangelicals' main objective is to defeat the "Black" President. The Southern Evangelical cannot call themselves Christians. They need to find a name suitable for their character and behavior. I have some names. What about you?

THE BIG STORY, BY E.J. DIONNE
When Pat Buchanan ran for president in the 1990s, the conservative commentator lovingly referred to his partisans as "peasants with pitchforks." The pitchfork brigade now enjoys more power in Republican politics than even Buchanan thought possible.

Mitt Romney is still the Republican front-runner by virtue of the delegates he relentlessly piles up. But Romney keeps failing to bring this slugfest to a close. No matter how much he panders and grovels to the party's right, its supporters will never see him as one of their own. READ MORE

FEATURED COLUMN: CONNIE SCHULTZ
Last weekend, Newt Gingrich strutted into an overflow crowd of people waiting for him at the Wiregrass Museum in Dothan, Ala., and greeted them with an insult.

"What a crowd," he said. "I'm really impressed. There must be no one left at Wal-Mart this afternoon." Makes you wonder, doesn't it, what Gingrich was willing to say to the majority of Alabamians who didn't support him.

When I heard about Gingrich's Wal-Mart crack, my head hurt, and my heart ached. He tends to have that effect on me in general, but this time my grievances were more specific. READ MORE

BAD ADVICE
Goldman Sachs, arguably the most storied investment bank on Wall Street, has been compared to a money-sucking vampire squid and called the evil empire of finance. Now some of its top money-makers seem to agree. Greg Smith, an executive director at the bank, resigned with a blistering editorial that accused the bank of losing its "moral fiber," putting profits ahead of customers' interests, and dismissing customers as "muppets." AROUND THE WORLD
The Taliban militant leadership in Afghanistan says they are suspending talks with the United States.

According to a statement released Thursday by Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, the United States kept changing the terms of the negotiations.

Mujahid says that the Taliban only wanted to discuss prisoner transfers and the establishment of a political office in Qatar, but U.S. negotiators sought to broaden the discussion. Mujahid says they did not want the Afghan government of President Hamid Karzai included in the talks. READ MORE

Concerned Christian Men Mentor and Feed 300 Boys with Monthly Man/Boy Breakfast
Black Star Logo
The Concerned Christian Men (CCM) was founded in October 1996 by George D. Glenn, a Harvard-educated native Chicagoan (graduate of Senn High School). CCM's initial and continuing focus has been to provide strong "Black Male" leadership and guidance to young Black boys living on the South Side of Chicago to assist them in becoming positive, contributing members of their communities.

CCM's Flagship activity is the monthly Man-Boy Breakfast that over 29,000 men and boys have attended since 1996 (140 breakfasts). Since April 2002 the breakfasts are held at Simeon Career Academy, a state-of-the-art vocational and academic high school. We average over 300 men and boys for our Man-Boy breakfasts.

Achievement Gaps Tied to

March 7, 2012

The fractious debate over how much schools can counteract poverty's impact on children is far from settled, but a recently published collection of research strongly suggests that until policymakers and educators confront deepening economic and social disparities, poor children will increasingly miss out on finding a path to upward social mobility.

The achievement gap between poor children and rich children has grown significantly over the past three decades and is now nearly twice as large as the black-white gap, according to Sean F. Reardon, a Stanford University sociologist. He examined data on family income and student scores on standardized tests in reading and math spanning 1960 to 2007.

Parents Are Building Organizations
to Help Educate their Children

Whether they're organizing events, buttonholing legislators, or simply trading ideas and information, a growing number of "parent unions" are attempting to stake out a place in policy debates over education in states and districts, amid a crowded field of actors and advocates.

As the term implies, some of these organizations see themselves as countering the political might of teachers' unions, though others see the labor groups as allies. Still other parents' unions are less concerned with teacher and labor-management issues than with advancing their own tightly focused-or very broad-agendas. Those agendas include improving school gifted-and-talented programs, for instance, and closing achievement gaps between minority and white students.

THE BIG STORY
The putative frontrunner made no public appearances on Tuesday night after an embarrassing third place finish in both the Alabama and Mississippi Republican presidential primary elections -- even though the Romney campaign had been predicting a victory. Instead, his headquarters dispatched a written statement that congratulated Rick Santorum for winning both states, while reminding people of his huge delegate advantage. It was an unusual way to try to demonstrate confidence. READ MORE

GOP PRIMARY
What do you get when 70 or so Republicans gather in a restaurant-bar? In American Samoa, you get a presidential caucus worth 9 full delegates to the Republican National Convention. (The famous "first in the nation" New Hampshire primary, on the other hand, awards 12 delegates.) The U.S. territory, located about 2,300 miles south of Hawaii, got its chance Tuesday to vote on a presidential candidate. And it didn't even conflict with happy hour. READ MORE

FEATURED COLUMN: GENE LYONS
To hear some people tell it, the United States hovers on the brink of tyranny. President Obama has seized dictatorial power to murder any American citizen he secretly deems a terrorist. Attorney General Eric Holder's craven rationalization of the so-called "CIA assassination" of U.S.-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in the wilds of Yemen last September struck some as the veritable death-knell of democracy.

Sounds grave, doesn't it? Then why are so many Americans, myself included, so blasé about it? READ MORE

Spin it any way you want. Justify it, rationalize it, chalk it up to the exigencies of war. And at the end, the fact remains: A United States citizen is dead and the United States government killed him. Without trial. Without due process. Without hesitation. And many of those who loudly deplored George W. Bush for smaller excesses seem content to allow Barack Obama this larger one. READ MORE

U.S. Representative Bob Turner, who famously won ex-Rep.
