The Big Story, By Carl Hiaasen
If you're a Democrat, here's what you're thinking as voters go to the polls in Florida's Republican primary: Pinch me. Because Newt Gingrich -- defrocked speaker of the House, original godfather of government gridlock, two-faced philandering impeacher of Bill Clinton, fondler of six-figure Tiffany jewels -- has a chance against Mitt Romney. The factory jobs that boosted high school graduates (or even drop-outs) into middle-class lifestyles -- complete with health insurance and comfortable pensions -- are now on the endangered species list. Then on Monday morning, Mitt Romney retorted by bragging that a change of "tactics" is boosting him in the polls. READ MORE

A year after Republicans swept into office across the country, many have trained their sights on what has long been a right-wing dream: the steep reduction or even outright elimination of state income taxes. They've launched efforts in Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma and South Carolina, even though nobody has plausibly explained how any of those states will recoup the lost revenue.
