Review of: Williams, God's Own Party

Review of: Williams, God's Own Party:

What this reviewer fails to discover is the Bible is the Book for revelation and spirituality. Many of these "Southern Evangelicals" are bigots and racists. What Bible are they reading? What Jesus are they following? The Southern Evangelicals' main objective is to defeat the "Black" President. The Southern Evangelical cannot call themselves Christians. They need to find a name suitable for their character and behavior. I have some names. What about you?

THE BIG STORY, BY E.J. DIONNE
When Pat Buchanan ran for president in the 1990s, the conservative commentator lovingly referred to his partisans as "peasants with pitchforks." The pitchfork brigade now enjoys more power in Republican politics than even Buchanan thought possible.

Mitt Romney is still the Republican front-runner by virtue of the delegates he relentlessly piles up. But Romney keeps failing to bring this slugfest to a close. No matter how much he panders and grovels to the party's right, its supporters will never see him as one of their own. READ MORE

FEATURED COLUMN: CONNIE SCHULTZ
Last weekend, Newt Gingrich strutted into an overflow crowd of people waiting for him at the Wiregrass Museum in Dothan, Ala., and greeted them with an insult.

"What a crowd," he said. "I'm really impressed. There must be no one left at Wal-Mart this afternoon." Makes you wonder, doesn't it, what Gingrich was willing to say to the majority of Alabamians who didn't support him.

When I heard about Gingrich's Wal-Mart crack, my head hurt, and my heart ached. He tends to have that effect on me in general, but this time my grievances were more specific. READ MORE

BAD ADVICE
Goldman Sachs, arguably the most storied investment bank on Wall Street, has been compared to a money-sucking vampire squid and called the evil empire of finance. Now some of its top money-makers seem to agree. Greg Smith, an executive director at the bank, resigned with a blistering editorial that accused the bank of losing its "moral fiber," putting profits ahead of customers' interests, and dismissing customers as "muppets." AROUND THE WORLD
The Taliban militant leadership in Afghanistan says they are suspending talks with the United States.

According to a statement released Thursday by Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, the United States kept changing the terms of the negotiations.

Mujahid says that the Taliban only wanted to discuss prisoner transfers and the establishment of a political office in Qatar, but U.S. negotiators sought to broaden the discussion. Mujahid says they did not want the Afghan government of President Hamid Karzai included in the talks. READ MORE

FEATURED COLUMN: JIM HIGHTOWER
It looks like the Obama administration is making it harder for federal workers to serve the public by blowing the whistle on wrongdoing. Every president hates leaks, but this one is hauling public-spirited leakers into federal court, vengefully accusing them of being spies! READ MORE

SOCIAL SECURITY AND YOU
I am a certified public accountant. One of my clients, who signed up for his Social Security about a year ago, just got a letter from Social Security's "Office of Quality Assurance." The people there want to redo his claim for benefits. And they are asking him to bring in his military discharge papers (he was in the Army 40 years ago), his W-2 records for the past 10 years and other documents. What's going on? READ MORE
