Breaking: Biden Warns GOP Will End Medicare "As We Know It"

In Florida, The Vice President Stands Up For Medicare -- And Obama Reforms

Campaigning in South Florida, Vice President Joe Biden lashed out against House Republicans' proposed changes to Medicare, warning a roomful of retirees that their plan would jeopardize future health care for millions of older Americans.

Biden said the Medicare provisions contained in a House GOP budget would effectively dismantle the popular program as it is currently structured. Florida, a key battleground state in the presidential race and a haven for senior citizens, has about 3.3 million Medicare recipients.

"We believe in strengthening Medicare, and they don't," Biden said. "They can make Medicare solvent again. We don't have to gut it to make it last."

He also warned of the consequences of Republicans winning the presidency: ''I promise you, you will see the end of Medicare as we know it." .... Read More.

THE BIG STORY, BY JOE CONASON
When the price of gasoline rises, so does ideological demagogy. Frustrated drivers understandably want to believe the politician who promises cheaper fuel if the industry is freed from environmental safeguards, bureaucratic regulations and burdensome taxes.

Yet America has already tried these Republican miracle cures. Under the Bush administration, Dick Cheney worked in secrecy with energy lobbyists to remove all obstacles to domestic drilling, regardless of the cost to the air, water, land, and wildlife, not to mention the Treasury.

What the resulting oil boom has not brought is a reduction in consumer prices, now approaching the same level in America as during the summer of 2008, before the economic crash. Worldwide recovery has meant a return to rising prices -- mitigated only by trends toward energy conservation, urban revival, and fuel economy. In those hopeful signs may be discerned the only reliable escape from the global energy spiral. READ MORE

TOY POLITICS
A top campaign advisor's comparison of Mitt Romney's positions before and after he (eventually) secures the GOP presidential nomination with the game of shaking up and resetting a popular children's toy continues to dog the Reublican front-runner. Romney plunged into a second day of damage control Thursday when he visited Capitol Hill, where he even paid tribute to the Senate boss of the Tea Party faction, South Carolina Republican Jim DeMint. WAR AND PEACE
The civilian attorney for Staff Sergeant Robert Bales has portrayed his client as a patriot, loving father and devoted husband who had been traumatized by a comrade's injury and sent into combat one too many times. "I'm not putting the war on trial," he said, "but the war is on trial." READ MORE

POLITICS
According to a new Economist/YouGov poll, President Barack Obama is beating Mitt Romney among women by a 55 to 38 percent margin. Unless Romney can shake his Etch A Sketch -- and make women forget his failure to denounce Rush Limbaugh and his promise to eliminate Planned Parenthood -- the Republican frontrunner will have a very difficult time prevailing in November 2012. FEATURED COLUMN: MARK SCHMITT
Thanks in part to Lawrence Lessig's excellent book Republic, Lost, out recently, a new way of thinking about lobbying has entered public discourse: lobbying as "legislative subsidy." In this view, lobbyists aren't entirely in the persuasion business. Rather, a large part of what they do is to help already friendly but under-staffed and not-always-smart legislators understand complex issues and figure out how to do their jobs. READ MORE
