A critical time for health care reform

Organizing for America
Fred --

As we speak, key committees in Congress are weighing options and making final decisions about how to tackle health care reform. This could be one of the last opportunities to shape the legislation before it's written.

The behind-the-scenes committee negotiations aren't front-page news, but the lobbyists trying to block reform are following every detail, and they won't miss a day. If the final plan is to uphold President Obama's principles of reduced costs, guaranteed choice -- including the choice of a robust public insurance option -- and quality care for all, your voice must be heard.

Please write a short letter to the editor of your local paper expressing your support for President Obama's three principles for real health care reform, and asking your Congressional representatives to do the same. You can write and submit your letter in just a few minutes using our simple online tool.

Write a letter to help pass health care

These letters are an easy but powerful way to make a difference. The letters section is one of the most-read parts of the newspaper, and decision-makers in Congress and the media watch it closely to gauge where the public stands.

Good letters are usually just two or three short paragraphs. You can just explain that you're a local resident who knows we need real health care reform following the President's three principles, and we need it now. If you have a personal experience with the health care system that motivates you, that will make the letter even more powerful.

The opponents of real reform have deep pockets and insider access, and they're holding nothing back in their drive to derail progress before the plans go public.

Your letter, submitted at this time, can help remind your representatives that the American people are counting on them to stand up to special interests and deliver the comprehensive reform we so desperately need.

Thanks for all that you do,

Mitch

Organizing for America

P.S. -- These letters are a vital first step. Stay tuned for other critical ways to organize locally and make a difference in this campaign. We can only win this thing if we all work together every step of the way.

Baier, Garrett add Obama climate remarks to Fox-manufactured "apology tour"
Following a trend by other Fox News figures, Bret Baier and Major Garrett claimed that President Obama "apologized" for the U.S. role in global warming. Brzezinski says the fact that she is (nominally) progressive and works in New York makes her claim more credible. In fact, it may explain why she is so wrong. A "Whites-only" pool in 2009? Take action now

Please read the article below; if you can support, it would be appeciated.

  _____

"Whites only?" Sixty-five kids at a summer camp were recently kicked out of
a swimming pool, evidently because of their race.

  <http://www.colorofchange.org/images/spacer.gif>
We can't let this stand.
  <http://www.colorofchange.org/images/spacer.gif>
Join us in condemning the swim club and asking the Department of Justice to
investigate.
  <http://www.colorofchange.org/images/spacer.gif>

<http://www.colorofchange.org/swim/?id=2259-889892> Click here

Dear Frankie,

Two weeks ago outside Philadelphia, 65 children from a summer camp tried to
go swimming at a club that their camp had a contract to use. Apparently, the
people at the club didn't know that the group of kids was predominantly
Black.

When the campers entered the pool, White parents allegedly took their kids
out of the water, and the swimming club's staff asked the campers to leave.
The next day, the club told the summer camp that their membership would be
canceled and that their payment would be refunded. When asked why, the
club's manager said that a lot of kids "would change the complexion ... and
the atmosphere of the club."1

A "Whites only" pool in 2009 should not be tolerated. The club's actions
appear to be a violation of section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act.2 Whether
or not any laws were violated, a "Whites only" pool should be something
every American condemns.

Please join us in doing exactly that, and please email your friends and
family and invite them to do the same. Your signature will also be used to
call on the Department of Justice to evaluate suing the facility under
federal law. It takes just a moment to do both, here:

http://www.colorofchange.org/swim/?id=2259-889892

Obama is President but that doesn't mean that suddenly all is fine when it
comes to race in America. This is a vivid reminder of what we know still
lies beneath the surface.

We all know stories like this one -- similar incidents play out quietly
every day in different communities across the country. The difference in
this case is that folks got caught and there was a contract in place that
makes for a potentially illegal act.

Standing up now isn't just about making things right for these kids in
Philadelphia or bringing consequences to this swim club (called the Valley
Swim Club). It's about creating a climate of accountability everywhere. If
we can publicly shame the Valley Swim Club and hold them accountable for
this incident, it will make others think twice before engaging in what
appears to be blatant discrimination.

Please join us in condemning the Valley Swim Club's behavior and calling on
the Justice Department to investigate whether they violated civil rights
laws. And please ask your friends and family to do the same.

Crossroads EPAGE: Chuck Colson on Michael Jackson

Hello Saints;
Some pretty powerful and truthful Words.......
There's a Message in Michael's death that we all need to learn....

CROSSROADS E-Page

July 8, 2009

Devotional: FYI from Chuck Colson's BreakPoint

The Pinnacle of Success? The Passing of a Pop Star
July 8, 2009
I am an aging, white conservative Baptist. My taste in music runs from Bach to Mozart to Lawrence Welk. Indeed, my staff might say I am the un-hippest man alive.

So you might think that I am surprised by the frenzied and non-stop media coverage of the death of Michael Jackson—perhaps the greatest pop star of all time. But I'm not.

You may think that I don't "get" why his fans by the millions are grieving, buying up Jackson CDs like they are going out of style, holding vigils at his mansion, desperately trying to get tickets to his memorial service in Los Angeles. But I do.

Here is why they have reason to mourn: Michael Jackson was, by any standard, a musical genius. His albums and his videos thrilled successive generations of pop fans. In fact, I was enthralled myself when I first watched his video presentation at an Epcot exhibit some 20 years ago.

There was, indeed, no one quite like Michael Jackson. And now there will be no new albums, no comeback concert tour, no new dance moves. That's why they're mourning.

But here's why they—and all of us—should mourn the real tragedy that Michael Jackson's story is. Andrew Sullivan at the Atlantic Monthly blog said it well: Michael Jackson "was everything our culture worships; and yet he was obviously desperately unhappy, tortured, afraid and alone." He was, as Sullivan noted, nothing but a creature of our culture, which puts "fame and celebrity" at its core, with money as its driving force, without regard for the person caught up in it or the character he exhibits.

By numerous published accounts, Jackson was emotionally abused by his father, a man consumed by the idea that his child could be a superstar.  Jackson was a drug addict accused of pedophilia, given to all manner of bizarre behavior. He was, in the end, as Bob Herbert opined in the New York Times, "psychologically disabled, to the point where he was a danger to himself and others."

It makes the scenes of adoring crowds pushing and shoving to get near yesterday's memorial service, and the non-stop live television coverage, all the more bizarre and tragic. We worship the celebrity for his fame, degenerate lifestyle not withstanding.

Jackson achieved the summit of what this culture values most—fame—and paid for it with his life. And that is a tragedy.
Life is filled with teaching moments. And for parents, this tragedy is an opportunity to talk with our children about what they really want out of life—what matters most.

And it's also a time for parents to look in the mirror and ask what we really want for our kids. If the answer is success in life, then we had better know what that definition of success is.

That's because even Christian parents are not immune to the siren song of fame and fortune for their kids. It's great that your child can sing and dance. It's wonderful that he can hit a baseball a country mile. She just might win that academic scholarship to Harvard.
But winning that scholarship, or playing in the major leagues, is not the Christian definition of success. Doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with your God is.

Character matters. Not fame. No matter how un-hip that sounds.

Michael Jackson's Accuser Admits HE LIED..

Jordan Chandler admits he lied about Michael Jackson
June 27, 2009

After the sudden death of Michael Jackson, Jordan Chandler tells the truth.

In 1993, Chandler told a psychiatrist and police that he and Jackson had engaged in sexual acts that included oral sex.  The boy supposedly gave a detailed description of Jackson 's genitals.  The case was settled out of court for a reported $22 million, but the strain led Jackson to begin taking painkillers.  Eventually, he became addicted to these prescription medications.

Now, maybe for the remorse of his death, Chandler decides to tell us the truth.  "I never meant to lie and destroy Michael Jackson, but my father made me to tell only lies.  Now, I can't tell Michael how much I'm sorry and ask if he will forgive me."  Evan Chandler, the boy's father, was tape-recorded saying among other things, "If I go through with this, I win big-time.  There's no way I lose.  I will get everything I want, and they will be destroyed forever."

Jordan was under the influence of a controversial father who told his son to say that Jackson had touched his penis.  Chandler then told a psychiatrist and later police that he and Jackson had engaged in acts of kissing, masturbation and oral sex, as well as giving a detailed description of what he alleged were the singer's genitals.

"Now for the first time i can't bare to lie anymore.  Michael Jackson didn't do anything to me, all of it was my father's lies to escape from being poor."

Note from Lewis:

I feel the most important parts of the video at the link below are the quotes from various reports submitted at the time of the charges.  They are mostly from the police who were conducting the investigation.  If you take just a few moments to read them, I believe you will find they are quite enlightening.

At the end of the video is a wise old saying, "Lies run sprints, but the truth runs marathons!"
