Koran-Burning Pastor's Daughter: He's 'Gone Mad,' 'Needs Help'

The estranged daughter of a U.S. pastor who has threatened to burn copies of the Koran believes he has gone mad and needs help, she said in a German media interview conducted on Friday.

Emma Jones, who lives in Germany, told Spiegel Online she had e-mailed her father urging him to drop his plan to burn copies of the Islamic holy book, writing: "Dad, leave it be!"

He did not reply, she said.

Facing an outpouring of concern from U.S. leaders and anger from Muslims worldwide, Pastor Terry Jones, of Gainesville, Florida, said on Friday he no longer planned to burn the Koran on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

But Jones appeared to leave open the possibility he could change his mind if a proposed meeting fails to take place on Saturday in New York with Muslim leaders planning to build an Islamic centre and mosque near the site of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"My father is not one to give up," said Emma Jones, 30. "As a daughter, I see the good-natured core inside him. But I think he needs help."

"I think he has gone mad," she added.

She described how a Christian community her father spent years building in Cologne, Germany, was at first Bible-oriented but later changed. After leaving the community aged 17, Emma Jones said she returned in 2005 to find it had become sect-like.

"I saw that my father preached and did things that I didn't find biblical at all. He demanded total allegiance to himself and his second wife," she said. His first wife, her mother, died in 1996.

"That was real religious delusion I saw," she added. "Typical evidence of a sect."

Emma Jones said the community kicked out her father in 2008, when he returned to the United States.

"I really hope he comes to his senses," she said.

Convicted former governor George Ryan's ailing wife in court for hearing | abc7chicago.com

The wife of former Illinois governor George Ryan appeared in court Thursday as attorneys for her husband requested his early release from prison. Attorneys say Ryan's wife, Lura Lynn, is very ill. They say Mrs. Ryan's condition brings urgency to their request for his release.

Are these people crazy? How many inmates in Illinois prisons or from Illinois convictions have family members die or are laying on their death bed? My wife of 16 years was murdered while I was in prison. The Illinois Department of Corrections refused to let me go to her funeral and visit with my children, one of which found her mother's body laying in the alley with a hole in her head. It is ludicrous for Ryan to believe he should get out of jail because his wife is dying. Ryan, as I, should have thought about the lives we touch when we are involved in matters that may result in prison time.

Arianna Huffington: Obama Insists He Made "The Right Decisions" on the Economy -- The Struggling Middle Class Begs to Differ

Arianna Huffington: In his otherwise excellent speech on Wednesday, the president showed that, when it comes to the plight of the middle class, he still doesn't get it. "Not everything we've done over the last two years has worked as quickly as we had hoped," he said, "and I am keenly aware that not all our policies have been popular." But the problem isn't that his economic policies have been slow to succeed or unpopular -- it's that they've been inadequate given the magnitude of the crisis. And, in his sit-down with George Stephanopoulos, he insisted that his administration has made "the right decisions to move this country forward after a very devastating recession." Can he really believe that, with unemployment at 9.6 percent, millions of homes foreclosed, and the middle class under assault? In any case, this appears to be the administration's story, and they are sticking to it -- come hell or a double-dip recession. Click here to read more.
