What are the social policy implications?

From ancient Egyptian philosophers spoken and written of by Molefi Asante, Jacob Caruthers, Chiek Anta Diop and Psychologist Wade Noble; to ancient Greek thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle; to Christian philosophers such as Augustine, Anselm, Aquinas and R.C. Sproul; to the shapers of modern thought such as Hume, Kant, Nietzsche, Illinois Congressman Danny Davis and Dr. Terra Thomas; What are the consequences of each of these thinkers and other important thinkers' ideas on world events, theology, the fine arts and culture? Are we, as a society, still scratching to survive our ideologies? Many of us work, interact and socialize with each other because we have too. There is a small percentage of those who do it because they want too. We draw racial and political boundaries to protect ourselves from being known for who we really are. What is your contribution to this trivia?

Media Matters Daily Summary

Media Matters for America
Here are today's news items from Media Matters for America, click on the title or 'read more' to read the entirety of each story.
The Washington Times' history of anti-gay rhetoric
The Washington Times' anti-gay onslaught against Department of Education official Kevin Jennings -- which has featured anti-gay rhetoric, falsehoods, and distortions -- is only the most recent offense in the newspaper's long history of publishing anti-gay rhetoric and smears. Media Matters for America has compiled an extensive -- though by no means all-inclusive -- list of such rhetoric since the late 1980s, including the paper's warnings against the "gay agenda," attacks on the possibility of gay men and lesbians serving openly in the military, minimizing of the AIDS epidemic, and attacks on gay relationships and gay rights. Fox News' Emanuel advances Lieberman's dubious claim about public option increasing debt
On Fox & Friends, correspondent Mike Emanuel advanced the falsehood that a public option will increase the national debt by adopting Sen. Joe Lieberman's claim that it "could rack up major debt, sending the country into a recession worse than the one we're currently in." In fact, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that health care bills with a public option reduce or have no major impact on the deficit; moreover, every proposed bill with a public option thus far has required enrollees to cover its costs through premiums, rather than have the plans be paid for through federal revenues. Drudge advances false claim that Rep. Owens "broke four promises in one hour" by voting for House health care bill
A Drudge-hyped article claimed that Rep. Bill Owens (D-NY), in his first day in office, broke four campaign promises at once by voting for the House health care bill. In fact, in accusing Owens of breaking campaign promises, the article misrepresented both Owens' campaign positions and provisions of the House's health care bill.

After repeatedly publishing his misinformation, Wash. Post gives Will space to brag about global warming poll
After repeatedly publishing and failing to correct George Will's false and misleading claims about global warming, The Washington Post published Will's November 8 column bragging that "a Pew poll shows that only 57 percent of Americans think there is solid evidence of global warming, down 20 points in three years." Will has previously misrepresented sea ice data and forwarded other global warming misinformation in the pages of the Post. Read More
In WSJ op-ed, Lomborg issues faulty claim about global warming's impact on rainfall
In arguing against the pursuit of global warming policies, Bjorn Lomborg wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that "[c]utting carbon emissions will likely increase water scarcity, because global warming is expected to increase average rainfall levels around the world." In fact, Lomborg's argument ignores that while scientists predict that climate change may increase precipitation globally, they believe some areas will experience more flooding because of the rainfall, whereas others will be disproportionately affected by drought. Read More
In Newsweek, Will employs falsehood to attack Newsweek article on warming
In a November 7 Newsweek column, George Will claimed that global warming "has not increased" for 11 years and suggested that the world may be cooling in order to attack an October 31 Newsweek profile of former Vice President Al Gore. Scientists and statisticians reject Will's claim that recent temperatures are evidence that there is no global warming as they have rejected many of Will's previous claims about global warming. Quick fact: Beck fill-in Bolling falsely claimed House health bill puts us "$1.2 trillion further in debt"
Filling in for Glenn Beck, Fox Business Channel host Eric Bolling falsely claimed of the House health care reform bill, "if the Congressional Budget Office is right and the government program actually costs what they tell you it will cost", then we "woke up Sunday morning $1.2 trillion further in debt." Having attacked Obama for overseas "apology tour," conservative media now attack him for not going to Berlin
Members of the conservative media, including Fox News, are attacking President Obama for not attending the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. But when Obama has traveled abroad in the past -- including a trip in which Obama commemorated D-Day -- Fox News and figures at other media outlets have criticized him for supposedly going on an "apology tour." Laughing hysterically, Fox News media criticism show repeats fake HBO story that Fox apologized for starting
During the November 8 edition of Fox News Watch -- Fox News' media criticism and analysis program -- host Jon Scott repeated the fake story that President Obama watched an HBO documentary about himself on November 3 instead of election returns. However, Fox News White House correspondent Major Garrett said on November 4 that the story -- which Fox News started -- was incorrect and apologized for what he said was his "mistake." Read More
Quick fact: Hume says if Obama had included tax cuts in stimulus, GOP would have supported it -- but he did and they didn't
Brit Hume claimed that if President Obama included tax cuts with the stimulus bill's "spending extravaganza," it "would have attracted Republican votes." Read More
Quick fact: Matthews dismisses abortion fund segregation allowed under status quo as an "accounting trick"
Chris Matthews dismissed as an "accounting trick" a proposed amendment to the House health care bill that would segregate funds to make sure that federal subsidies are not used to pay for most abortions. But under the status quo, such abortion fund segregation is currently allowed for Medicaid. Read More
Quick fact: Morris falsely claimed under House health bill, "[Y]ou can actually go to jail for not having health insurance"

Hannity concocts smear that Obama at fault for Ft. Hood shooting
Sean Hannity speculated that "there is a chance our government knew all about" alleged Fort Hood shooter Malik Nadal Hasan "and did nothing because nobody wanted to be called an Islamophobe," and asked, "What does it say about Barack Obama and our government?" But there is no evidence that Obama was aware of the emails between Hasan and an imam with alleged ties to Al Qaeda; moreover, Hannity did not address what the incident says about President Bush, who was in office when the authorities reportedly first intercepted the emails. House vote TOMORROW

Fred --

This is it -- the House of Representatives will vote on health insurance reform tomorrow. All signs point to it being incredibly close, possibly even coming down to a single vote.

With the clock ticking, insurance company lobbyists are going all out to stop reform. Please call Rep. Jesse Jackson at 202-225-0773 now.

President Obama is visiting the House tomorrow to call for reform, and I hope you'll add your voice to his right away. If you haven't called before, now is the time. And if you have recently called, thank you -- now please ask friends, family members, and co-workers in your district to join you.

http://my.barackobama.com/HouseVote

Everything we're fighting for comes down to moments like this -- and every second counts.

Thanks for stepping up,

Mitch

Subject: Urgent: House vote soon

Friend --

The House's first full vote on health reform legislation may come as early as this week. It'll be the first time in more than 60 years that the full body votes on comprehensive reform, and we expect it to be very close.

But with just a few days before the vote, the insurance industry and their allies are putting extraordinary pressure on every representative to defeat it. We know that their expensive lobbyists will be dashing to each congressional office, attempting to twist arms. The only question is whether the phones will be ringing off the hook with constituents supporting reform while that happens.

Can you call your representative right now and tell them to vote in favor of real health insurance reform? Then, click here to report your call. According to our records, you live in Illinois's 2nd congressional district.

Please call: Rep. Jesse Jackson at 202-225-0773

Call Congress

(Not your representative? Click here to look yours up.)

The House bill incorporates the best ideas from Democrats and Republicans to guarantee security and stability for those with insurance, provide affordable options for those without -- including the choice of a public insurance option -- and reduce costs for families and small businesses, all while decreasing the deficit.

Many representatives are standing with the President and fighting hard for reform. They need to know that they have our thanks and our support.

And we need to remind the rest of Congress that Americans need them to rise above partisan divides and stand up to the special interests. Please call:

http://my.barackobama.com/HouseVote

It's down to the wire. Your hard work helped bring us to this historic moment. Now let's bring it home.

Thanks,

Mitch

The myth of Fox News' ratings spike
Fact: The breathless claim that Fox News' ratings recently spiked thanks to the White House's public critique is bogus hype -- hype that Fox News and the Beltway press have relentlessly pushed. Read More
Fox News ignores that vaccinating Gitmo detainees benefits military personnel
The November 2 editions of Fox News' Special Report and Hannity both reported solely on criticism of reported plans to allow Guantánamo Bay detainees access to H1N1 vaccines, ignoring the benefit to military personnel. Neither report noted that military personnel will be vaccinated before detainees, that vaccinating detainees can help protect military personnel and their families, or that conservatives have repeatedly in the past touted the health care benefits given to detainees in order to defend the controversial detention center. Washington Times adds judicial nominee David Hamilton to its witch hunt on Obama nominees
A Washington Times editorial has again used select comments and decisions made by one of President Obama's judicial nominees to smear him as a "radical's radical." In addition to invoking judicial nominee Judge David Hamilton's views on "empathy" -- a favorite conservative attack -- the editorial, which is being highlighted by the Fox Nation, misleadingly suggested that Hamilton believes judges should "effectively amend the Constitution" and that he discriminated against Christianity by banning the word "Jesus" from state legislature prayer, but allowing the word "Allah." Following Rep. Foxx's lead, media conservatives compare health care reform to terrorism
On November 2, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) said on the House floor regarding health care legislation before the House: "I believe we have more to fear from the potential of that bill passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country." Following Foxx's statement, Fox News' Glenn Beck compared health care reform to 9-11, and talk radio host Neal Boortz and the Fox Nation promoted Foxx's attack. Read More

In recent days, following its pattern of advocacy, Fox News has repeatedly promoted Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-MN) upcoming anti-health care reform protest, to be held on Capitol Hill and in the halls of Congress. Fox News has previously promoted numerous other rallies such as the April 15 tea party protests, health care town hall protests, and the 9-12 march on Washington. Read More
Beck witch hunt for socialists, communists, Marxists moves on to SEIU's Stern
Continuing his pattern, Glenn Beck suggested during the November 3 edition of his radio program that SEIU's Andy Stern  is a communist, socialist, and Marxist because he said in an interview that "workers of the world unite, it's not just a slogan anymore. It's the way we're going to have to do our work." However, when asked in a separate interview why he uses the slogan, Stern replied that it's "good news" that "communism's dead"; further, numerous conservatives, including Newt Gingrich and John McCain, have approvingly cited quotes or tactics from communist and socialist dictators -- yet those conservatives have seemed to escape Beck's witch hunt. Media in 2001: Off-year elections have little national significance
Conservative media are attempting to use the results of gubernatorial elections to suggest President Obama's agenda and Democrats' 2010 electoral prospects are in trouble. In the wake of Bob McDonnell's apparent victory in the Virginia gubernatorial race, Media Matters has documented examples of media arguing that Democratic victories in 2001 had little national significance.
