Steve Clemons: Stop Hyperventilating: Obama Will Not Choose War with Iran

2010-07-23-obamapen.jpg

AP

Steve Clemons: While there are individuals in the Obama administration who are flirting with the possibility of military action against Iran, they are fewer in number than existed in the Bush administration. They are surrounded by a greater number of realists who are working hard to find a way to reinvent America's global leverage and power -- and who realize that a war with Iran ends that possibility and possibly spells an end to America presuming to be the globally predominant power it has been. Renowned Medical Doctor Reveals . . .
4 Nutrients Better
Than Antidepressants

And Without Those Dreadful Side Effects . . .

Exclusive Mind Health Update
From the Desk of Travis Davis
Newsmax Health Publisher

Image of people

Dear Friend,

If you're taking antidepressant medications, you're not alone.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at 2.4 billion drugs prescribed in 2005.

Of these, 118 million prescriptions were for antidepressants.

Depression affects millions of U.S. citizens and costs our society billions of dollars.

In fact, a landmark study on the economic burden of depression revealed that depression cost Americans a whopping $43.7 billion in 1990 alone — so you can just imagine what the costs would be today!

These figures put depression nearly on a par with other major illnesses, including heart disease and cancer.

So it's very important to take the illness of depression seriously — and seek help when needed.

Depression Is An Illness,
Not a Character Flaw

Scientists continue to look at the causes of this complex disorder. Researchers have noted discrete differences in the brain structure and brain chemistry of those who are depressed. Even genetic factors seem to be important.

If you've ever suffered from a major bout of depression, I'm sure you're intimately familiar with its symptoms.

Unfortunately, about half the folks who experience symptoms of depression are never diagnosed or treated. This could be due, at least in part, to the fact that many symptoms of depression are not recognized as such.

Symptoms of depression include the obvious and perhaps not so obvious:

  • Fatigue or decreased energy
  • Difficulty with concentration, memory, or decision making
  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  • Insomnia or sleeping too much
  • Loss of interest in hobbies or activities once enjoyed, including sex
  • Feelings of guilt, helplessness, or worthlessness
  • Overeating or loss of appetite
  • Persistent aches and pains, including headaches or digestive issues
  • Feelings of sadness or anxiousness
  • Thoughts of suicide

Because depression can be such a serious illness, it's crucial you NOT ignore these signs and symptoms.

Yet, on the other hand, many doctors prescribe strong antidepressant drugs at the drop of a hat, when perhaps more gentle and natural remedies would do the trick.

What Germany Knows About Depression
Treatment — That the U.S. Doesn't . . .

In Germany, the herbal remedy St. John's wort is the top antidepressant prescribed by doctors today. In fact, this natural remedy is 20 times as popular in Germany as the prescription drug Prozac when it comes to treating depression.

But in America, intense prescription drug promotion and biased media coverage of natural alternatives means little reliable information is available for those who seek gentler, non-pharmaceutical solutions for illness.

Hyla Cass, M.D., a psychiatrist who has been using herbal and nutrition treatments in her private practice in Los Angeles for 20 years, gave our Newsmax's Mind Health Report, a frank interview about depression treatment alternatives.

"Natural supplements should be the first line of treatment," says Dr. Cass. "Their more gentle actions are often all that is needed to resolve the imbalances leading to depression."

Pharmaceutical drugs don't aim to support healthy function of nerve cells in the brain. Rather, they function to manipulate the action of individual neurotransmitters, on the premise that changing levels of one or more of these chemical messengers will relieve depression.

For instance antidepressant drugs known as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) seek to increase the available levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin.

Yet, serotonin levels can also be improved with nutritional supplements.

For example, St. John's wort increases levels of serotonin, but with far fewer side effects.

Antidepressants Carry
Dreadful Side Effects

Side effects of SSRIs like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and others include tremors, headaches, nausea, weight gain, nervousness, dry mouth, excessive sweating, and diarrhea or constipation.

Some antidepressants, such as Cymbalta, even cause severe side effects such as hallucinations and suicidal thoughts.

Additionally, these drugs often reduce the desire and ability to have sex — in both men and women.

In contrast, St. John's wort can actually improve libido and sexual function.

Plus, you should know that these antidepressants don't actually elevate your mood, but rather stabilize or "flatten" it, reducing highs as well as lows. The overall effect can be what Dr. Cass calls "a zombie-like lack of emotion."

Because of this, it's important to know your options when it comes to helping yourself or a loved one with depression.

So I've had a special gift set aside for you.

Timeline of Breitbart's Sherrod smear
Media Matters has documented a timeline of Andrew Breitbart's smear of Shirley Sherrod, from Breitbart's initial posting of his deceptively edited clip of Sherrod -- which was amplified by Fox News and other right-wing media -- through the release of the full video of Sherrod's comments, which made clear the context of her remarks. When will Fox & Friends apologize for attacking Sherrod?
After Andrew Breitbart posted a deceptively cropped video and smeared Shirley Sherrod as a racist, Fox & Friends followed suit, airing the video clip and claiming that Sherrod's remarks were "Exhibit A" of "what racism looks like." The full video of Sherrod's remarks has since shown that Breitbart's clip was incredibly unfair, yet Fox & Friends has not acknowledged its mistake or apologized for attacking Sherrod's character on national television. Fox & Friends dredges up debunked claim that NAACP president was in attendance at Sherrod speech

Kelly's obsession with phony scandal is just the latest "hint of her political outlook"

Media denounce Breitbart's tactics, highlight his loss of credibility

Right-wing conspiracy: Sherrod controversy "orchestrated" by the White House to "smear Breitbart"
As Andrew Breitbart's Shirley Sherrod smear dissolved, rather than blame Breitbart for posting the deceptive clip of her speech, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, and Rush Limbaugh ludicrously began speculating that he and the conservative media could have been the victim of a "set-up" that had been "orchestrated" by the White House. GOP MEDIA - Media Done Right

Ombudsman Don Ohlmeyer: Lebron James' 'Decision' special damaging for ESPN - ESPN

Ombudsman Don Ohlmeyer: Lebron James' 'Decision' special damaging for ESPN - ESPN

This guy, and others like him, have a lot of nerve. Cleveland had no one around Lebron. So, it had to be the Lebron show. Now that Pat Riley and the Miami Heat may have put a "dynasty" together that appears to be a compliment to an "evolving" NBA free-agent innovated process, you got all the delusional critics coming out of the woodworks like roaches. People hate change. They would rather keep the "money" right where it is, depriving those who make it, to keep it. The "real" world is smarter than the kooks that are promoting foul against Lebron for being smarter than they think. Networks and Sports teams have been getting "all" the gravy from this type of deal for a long time. Its time for the players to take control of their destiny. It seems that the players may hold the key secret to success. Look at the Chris Paul story.
