| | | Number of Chicago Public School students shot rises to 319 in one year, as does fear of more to come A few stuffed animals and an arrangement of rocks remain Monday in the 8000 block of South Brandon Avenue to mark the fatal shooting last month of 12-year-old Niazi "Ryan" Banks, one of 24 Chicago Public School students killed during the past school year. (Terrence Antonio James, Chicago Tribune / June 26, 2012) By Noreen S. Ahmed-Ullah, Tribune reporter The number of Chicago Public Schools students killed in gun violence this past school year dipped slightly from the previous year, but the total number of students who were shot was up sharply, according to figures from Chicago police. Twenty-four students were fatally shot during the school year that ended June 15, four fewer than in the 2010-11 year. But the overall shooting toll - 319 - was the highest in four years and a nearly 22 percent increase from the previous school year. The rise in shootings of CPS students compounds concerns over an alarming increase in the city's homicide rate. Through June 17, homicides are up about 38 percent citywide this year compared with the same period in 2011, while shootings are up 12 percent. |
Adidas' shoes targeted prison culture Jason Whitlock June 21, 2012 When Nike began releasing its overpriced, slave-shop-constructed Air Jordan shoes in the 'hood specifically to attract inner-city tastemakers, where did you think the gym-shoe wars were headed? When Reebok, in an effort to undo Air Jordan's stranglehold on hip-hop sneakerheads, showered a multimillion-dollar contract on the Tupac Shakur of basketball, Allen Iverson, where did you think the gym-shoe wars were headed? That's right. Nike and Reebok placed the shackles on Adidas' now-canceled line of gym shoes. Nike and Reebok laid the groundwork for Adidas to take the gym-shoe wars to their rightful home - inside America's prisons |
Drowning prevention: Teaching black children to swim (70% of Black children cannot swim) By Rachel Leigh June 21, 2011 But for the Gentrys' sister, Yolanda, being in this water world comes with reservations. "I know African American kids around pools don't mix. The kids usually don't know how to swim." Studies support what Yolanda is saying -- that nearly 70% of black children do not know how to swim. That's the highest for any ethnic group. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the fatal drowning rate of African American children is three times that of white children. |
on summer learning By Gary Huggins, Special to CNN June 21, 2012 | Summer learning exercise. | Summer break is a treasured American tradition that arose from the need for children to work on farms during the warm-weather months. But while summer is a special time of year, it's turning into a missed opportunity, at a huge cost. It seems that for many, summer vacation has now come to equal not just a break from school, but a break from any kind of learning. Summer means freedom for schoolchildren to do absolutely nothing, for three long months. But we collectively pay a steep bill for our prolonged break from learning. Research shows students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning. Most students lose two months' worth of math skills each summer, and low-income children lose another two to three months in reading, putting them chronically behind their better-off peers. That's an incredible waste of the resources we pour into the school year. |

June 18, 2012 Abigail Gunderson is exhibiting exactly the attitude and energy South Dakota School of Mines & Technology youth program organizers hoped to see and hear on campus this summer. "Building a website was really cool and I'm still working on mine -- it's going to be awesome," Gunderson said last week, two days into the university's "Socket to Me" computer engineering camp for middle school girls. Gunderson, a 12-year-old from Pierre, will join almost 300 other young women on campus this summer to take part in camps focused on science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM fields. |
