The nationwide unemployment rate jumped to a 26-year high of 9.7 percent in August, according to the U.S. Labor Department. CNNMoney reports employers cut 216,000 jobs in the month, the fewest jobs lost since August 2008. Some economists had predicted an even higher loss of 230,000 jobs.
