(Chicago) - The Illinois Association for Criminal Justice (IACJ) has named Edna R. Lee as its inaugural director. Founded in 2010, IACJ is a membership group of criminal justice researchers, advocates, and service providers in Illinois.

Ms. Lee comes to IACJ with more than 25 years of experience in leadership of community-based organizations and correctional programs, including managing offender reentry and employment services within the Crossroads and North Lawndale Adult Transition Centers (ATCs).

"As Illinois seeks answers to reduce prison overcrowding while maintaining public safety, IACJ's role in positively impacting public policy decisions is more important than ever," said Diane Williams, president of the Safer Foundation and president of IACJ. "Edna Lee brings a wealth of practical experience, knowledge, and political acumen that will help advance necessary criminal justice reforms in Illinois."

Prior to joining IACJ, Lee led Positive Anti-Crime Thrust (PACT), which develops community-based programs to interact with police, courts, and corrections to reduce crime. During her career, Lee also has administered numerous programs that serve individuals involved in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The mission of IACJ is to ensure quality, comprehensive and coordinated services for people with criminal histories. Through public advocacy and community capacity- building, IACJ promotes the use of proven practices to reduce recidivism and restore individuals to stability and productivity within their communities.

IACJ currently has 286 individual and organizational members across Illinois. The Association was founded by the Safer Foundation; TASC, Inc.; Northern Illinois University Center for Governmental Studies; and University of Illinois at Chicago Jane Addams College of Social Work. The IACJ also would like to acknowledge the support of The Chicago Community Trust, our region's community foundation which, for nearly 100 years, has connected the generosity of donors with community needs by making grants to organizations working to improve metropolitan Chicago.

* Many articles refer to people with criminal records as "ex-offenders" or "offenders". While we appreciate all the positive press these issues receive, we are working to use other terms to describe our clients that do not carry such negative connotations. These terms include "people with criminal records" or "people reentering society".

Cyber Monday Deals 2012 likely to fuel busiest sales day Bye-bye Black Friday. So long Small Business Saturday. Now, it's Cyber Monday's turn. Cyber Monday, coined in 2005 by a shopping trade group that noticed online sales spiked on the Monday following Thanksgiving, is the next in a series of days that stores are counting on to jumpstart the holiday shopping season.

Russell Simmons: The Black Blog
Mr. President, I am deeply concerned about the future of urban America, specifically the plight of people of color. After listening to people's stories from across this country, this is what I have learned we need to do in order to re-build our families, our communities, our companies and our neighborhoods.

Jared Bernstein: Inequality and Budget Deficits: Why is Only the Latter an Emergency?
I just read two sweeping reports on the state of income inequality in the U.S. and other advanced economies. Perhaps it's because I've been so ensconced in fiscal cliff discussions, but I was struck by how much more alarmed policy makers are by the budget deficit than by the inequality situation. There are reasons for that tilt -- some good, some bad -- but based on magnitudes of the problem, it's far from clear that our current sole policy focus is warranted. Of course, many deficit scolds are motivated by anti-tax, anti-social insurance, and anti-government ideology, so they've got a vested interest in the status quo. But we're not going to make much progress if policy makers continue to obsess so exclusively on budget deficits instead of the income deficits experienced by the poor and middle class.
Steve Clemons: Mohammed Morsi: Abe Lincoln in Disguise? Or Another Mubarak?
Is Morsi the kind of leader who will aggrandize total power and then liberalize like a George Washington or Abraham Lincoln? Or is he more like a Lee Kuan Yew who can build a state and the facade of a democratic system while holding tightly to power for decades in all ways that matter?

The "fiscal cliff" or "curb"

Obama - Biden
Fred --

Right now, President Obama is working with leaders of both parties in Washington to reduce the deficit in a balanced way so we can lay the foundation for long-term middle-class job growth and prevent your taxes from going up.

Your voice and action helped re-elect President Obama, and hundreds of thousands of you have already responded to our survey, which will help shape our next steps. Thanks to your feedback, we're taking immediate action on one of your suggestions: keeping you informed about how the President is fighting for you so you can continue to talk to your friends, family, and neighbors. So here's the deal:

Graphic: Reducing the deficit in a balanced way The President's plan extends tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans Eliminates tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans Cuts spending by more than $3 trillion The Results

That's the President's plan, but he's not wedded to every detail. He is determined to work with Congress to find compromise and common ground. His guiding principle throughout this debate will be what's best for the middle class. He'll be fighting for you.

These problems are challenging, but they're solvable. In fact, the Senate has already passed a bill to keep your taxes low. The House needs to pass it, and Congress should get it to the President as soon as possible.

There's a lot at stake. With your help we'll continue to move this country forward.

Proposed 28th Amendment

I challenge you to read this and NOT have the will to pass it on.

No one has been able to explain to me why young men and women serve in the
U.S. Military for 20 years, risking their lives protecting freedom, and only get
50% of their pay on retirement.  While Politicians hold their political positions
in the safe confines of the capital, protected by these same men and women, and
receive full-pay retirement after serving one term. It just does not make any sense.
If each person who receives this will forward it on to 20 people, in three days,
most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is
one proposal that really should be passed around.

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: "Congress shall
make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply
equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law
that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to
the citizens of the United States ."

You are one of my 20+. I passed it on, will you?

"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice," and these brave soldiers have given you that right!!
