THE BIG STORY, BY JOE CONASON
No matter how carefully the former Massachusetts governor parses and prevaricates, many voters evidently feel they've detected the inner Mitt: a man with utmost regard for himself and people like him -- and a profound disregard for people like most of them. They've observed him straining to express concern for the unemployed, the poor, and the powerless, while sounding sincerely resentful whenever the privileged are held accountable. They've perceived an attitude of entitlement, whether he is withholding tax returns, defending tax breaks for billionaires, or spending vast amounts to defame opponents. And they don't like it, no matter what they may feel about Barack Obama. READ MORE

Here's the latest alarming dispatch from the frontiers of knowledge: Scientists say that Republicanism may be a congenital problem. Well, not scientists, exactly, but journalist Chris Mooney, whose latest treatise, The Republican Brain, The Science of Why They Deny Science -- And Reality, has got suggestible Democratic brains all atwitter.

Bewildered by right-wing irrationality, Mooney found it "impossible to ignore a mounting body of [scientific] evidence that points to a key conclusion. Political conservatives seem to be very different from political liberals at the level of psychology and personality." READ MORE

ELECTION 2012
Dick Lugar, the six-term GOP Senator from Indiana, is locked in the fight of his career, fending off a vigorous challenge from conservative groups angry at his cooperation with President Obama. And just as they did in Nevada, Colorado, and Delaware in 2010, those groups risk losing a Senate seat -- and even the opportunity for a Republican majority -- in the name of ideological purity. One afternoon early last year, I punched in my credit card information, paid $495 to the American College of Forensic Examiners International Inc., and registered for an online course. Among ACFEI's members are top names in science and law, along with some far less celebrated characters, notably including a violent prison inmate and a housecat. READ MORE

A recently unearthed video appears to show United States Border Patrol agents killing a Mexican man with a stun gun in a brutal display of excessive force. In one segment, a Mexican man who had been detained trying to illegally cross into California can be heard screaming for help and pleading for his life. In another, he is seen lying on the ground, surrounded by a dozen agents as one deploys the stun gun that would end his life. READ MORE

What we need is not tax reform, but revenue reform -- a system that is not only fair and efficient, but brings in adequate revenues to support the services we want government to provide. Nothing on the table right now -- not the Buffett Rule, nor anything in Paul Ryan's budget -- constitutes anything like revenue reform. And when we do see real revenue reform, it won't be a "win-win" for everyone. It will mean that those who have been the big winners in tax policy for the last 30 years will have to pay a bit more. THE BIG STORY, BY CYNTHIA TUCKER
Romney's experience of motherhood is significantly different from that of moms around the country whose family incomes hover at the median of $50,000 a year. And even I understand that my status as a longtime salaried professional has enabled me to escape the harried life of moms who rouse their children early for the ride to the day care center; who can't attend PTA meetings unless they can pay for a baby sitter; who do all the cooking, housecleaning and shopping in addition to wiping dirty noses. DON'T BE EVIL
The Federal Communications Commission announced Friday it is slapping a fine on Google for deliberately impeding an investigation into the collection of sensitive wireless network data as part of the search giant's Street View mapping project. The amount of the fine: $25,000.

That figure is, of course, barely a rounding error for the company. Google made $2.89 billion last quarter, or $25,000 in profits every 68 seconds. In fact, Google will have recouped the fine in less than the time it takes you to read this article. READ MORE

A recently unearthed video promises to erode Mitt Romney's moral high ground on the "working moms" controversy. While campaigning in New Hampshire last January, he said "even if you have a child two years of age, you have to go to work."

That speech wasn't the only time Romney has slammed stay-at-home moms. In his autobiography, the former Massachusetts governor insists that children of "nonworking parents" will be conditioned to lead "an indolent and unproductive life." READ MORE

The headline on the website of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops reads like good news: "Child Protection Audits Find Nearly All Dioceses Compliant."

What they were complying with, as the accompanying press release explained, was a set of zero-tolerance policies the bishops conference put in place a decade ago.

The view from Kansas City is far less consoling. In September, its local bishop will stand trial in criminal court for failing to report suspected child sexual abuse. READ MORE

President Obama Is Right

The National Memo
--- Sponsored Email ---
Dear National Memo Reader:

The Republican Party leadership no longer seems to understand the very concept of fairness that is so central to the American way. We urge you to consider this message from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee about how you can help to stop the GOP's tax-cut bonanza for the favored few.

Sincerely,
Harold Itzkowitz
Associate Publisher on behalf of The National Memo Team

Friend --
President Obama is calling on Congress to pass the Buffett Rule, which would finally put an end to special tax breaks for millionaires.

Republicans in Congress and right-wing pundits are attacking President Obama's plan, which would ensure the wealthy pay their fair share. Will you stand behind President Obama's plan for tax fairness?

Help us reach 100,000 signatures in the next 24 hours supporting President Obama's plan to ensure millionaires pay their fair share >>

As President Obama said in his State of the Union:
"Tax reform should follow the Buffett rule: If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30 percent in taxes... In fact, if you're earning a million dollars a year, you shouldn't get special tax subsidies or deductions...

Now, you can call this class warfare all you want. But asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes? Most Americans would call that common sense."
We can move America forward and stop the Republicans' assault on the middle class -- but only if we have the support of each and every one of you. Add your name today to show your support for the Buffett Rule:

Best,

Mike
