Another Black Child Murdered

by Kenneth Braswell

Kenneth Braswell and sons
I couldn't help but ask myself the question; "should I be shocked?" Another black youth shot down in the prime of his life visa vie unusual circumstances; Yeah, what's shocking bout that? I've asked myself this question over and over; against my need and desire to still grieve for Trayvon and struggling with my morals to remain empathic. However I can't ignore that I've lived long enough to remember the stories of Emmitt Till. A tragedy that lends some context to the value or lack thereof for young black life pressed up against the hard rock of racism.

Because this is our state of emergency today:
  • Of all Black fourth-graders, 58% are functionally illiterate.
  • In some cities, 80% of our boys drop out before finishing high school.
  • Every day 1,000 Black children are arrested.
  • 1 in every 8 African American males ages 25-29 is incarcerated.
  • The number one cause of death for our boys is homicide.

SUPREME ISSUE
The monumental fight over a health care law that touches all Americans -- and still divides them sharply -- comes before the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. There will be three days of argument, and then the justices will decide whether to kill or keep the largest expansion in the nation's social safety net in more than four decades. READ MORE

Clarifying moments are rare in politics. They are the times when previously muddled issues are suddenly cast into sharp relief and citizens are given a look behind the curtains of spin and obfuscation. Over the last week, Americans were blessed with three separate clarifying moments, thanks to Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney's advisor, and the man who shot Trayvon Martin. READ MORE

Resistance

The National Memo
--- Sponsored Email ---
Dear Friend:
In yet another GOP attack on civil rights, Republican governors and legislatures are promoting bills that suppress the right to vote. Your voice must be heard to repel this unfair and unjust legislation. We urge you to consider this vital message from the Democratic Governors Association about protecting the democratic liberties of all Americans.

Sincerely,
Harold Itzkowitz
Associate Publisher on behalf of The National Memo Team

Dear Friend,

Republican-backed voter suppression bills are sweeping across the country, and the results aren't pretty.

We've already seen these new laws deny basic voting rights to an 86 year-old Ohio war veteran, a class of Florida high school students, and a former Tennessee Congressman -- who was turned away at the polls on Super Tuesday.

Forecasts predict that voter suppression laws could deny five million traditionally Democratic voters the right to vote -- allowing Republicans to steal elections up and down the ballot.

The Republican governor of Pennsylvania just signed new voting restrictions into law, and the governor of Virginia--another battleground state--is about to do the same.

It's a blatant assault on our democracy, but Republicans know that preventing Democrats from voting is a sure-fire ticket to defeating President Obama and other Democratic candidates this November. We must fight back against voter suppression now, before it's too late.

Add your name to the chorus of people who are calling on Republicans to immediately cease-and-desist their attacks on voting rights.

It's an uphill battle with Republicans holding 29 governorships and a majority of state legislatures, but we've already seen some victories for our side.

Earlier this month, a Wisconsin judge blocked Governor Scott Walker's voter suppression law, a nod to the plaintiff's claim that the law does "irreparable harm." Thousands of civil rights leaders retraced the march from Selma to Montgomery, protesting what NAACP President Ben Jealous calls "the greatest attack on voting rights since segregation." And a former U.S. Marine in Tennessee refused to present his photo ID before voting in protest of his state's restrictions.

These are powerful symbols of resistance but we cannot stop now, while the Republicans are threatening to sign more of these laws in key swing states.

Join the movement to stop the Republican assault on voting rights by adding your name right now.

We will win this fight -- with your help.

Sincerely,

Elisabeth Pearson

Breaking: Biden Warns GOP Will End Medicare "As We Know It"

The National Memo
--- Breaking News from NationalMemo.com ---

In Florida, The Vice President Stands Up For Medicare -- And Obama Reforms

Campaigning in South Florida, Vice President Joe Biden lashed out against House Republicans' proposed changes to Medicare, warning a roomful of retirees that their plan would jeopardize future health care for millions of older Americans.

Biden said the Medicare provisions contained in a House GOP budget would effectively dismantle the popular program as it is currently structured. Florida, a key battleground state in the presidential race and a haven for senior citizens, has about 3.3 million Medicare recipients.

"We believe in strengthening Medicare, and they don't," Biden said. "They can make Medicare solvent again. We don't have to gut it to make it last."

He also warned of the consequences of Republicans winning the presidency: ''I promise you, you will see the end of Medicare as we know it." .... Read More.

Romney Tries To Erase Etch-A-Sketch

THE BIG STORY, BY JOE CONASON
When the price of gasoline rises, so does ideological demagogy. Frustrated drivers understandably want to believe the politician who promises cheaper fuel if the industry is freed from environmental safeguards, bureaucratic regulations and burdensome taxes.

Yet America has already tried these Republican miracle cures. Under the Bush administration, Dick Cheney worked in secrecy with energy lobbyists to remove all obstacles to domestic drilling, regardless of the cost to the air, water, land, and wildlife, not to mention the Treasury.

What the resulting oil boom has not brought is a reduction in consumer prices, now approaching the same level in America as during the summer of 2008, before the economic crash. Worldwide recovery has meant a return to rising prices -- mitigated only by trends toward energy conservation, urban revival, and fuel economy. In those hopeful signs may be discerned the only reliable escape from the global energy spiral. READ MORE

A top campaign advisor's comparison of Mitt Romney's positions before and after he (eventually) secures the GOP presidential nomination with the game of shaking up and resetting a popular children's toy continues to dog the Reublican front-runner. Thanks in part to Lawrence Lessig's excellent book Republic, Lost, out recently, a new way of thinking about lobbying has entered public discourse: lobbying as "legislative subsidy." In this view, lobbyists aren't entirely in the persuasion business. Rather, a large part of what they do is to help already friendly but under-staffed and not-always-smart legislators understand complex issues and figure out how to do their jobs. READ MORE

Sanford, Florida, police chief steps aside 'temporarily' in fallout from teen's death - CNN.com:

The only thing that will wake up our nation and the bigots is for a Black man to shoot and kill a White man under the "shoot" um down law. A Black man is going to "gun" a White boy down and claim self-defense. This is what happens when one thinks they can retain justice for themselves while denying it to others.
