Right-wing media distort testimony to claim Obama knew about Blagojevich "quid pro quo"
Right-wing media are misrepresenting testimony from former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's aide John Harris to claim President Obama knew that Blagojevich wanted a Cabinet post in exchange for appointing Valerie Jarrett to the Senate. In fact, Harris provided no evidence that Obama was aware of a proposed "quid pro quo"; the allegation is reportedly based on Blagojevich's unsupported claim that he was "confident" his wishes had been relayed to Obama. Moreover, there's no evidence that anyone at the White House did anything improper in relation to the Blagojevich scandal Read More

Fox's "straight news" falsely reports federal agencies are boycotting Arizona
Fox News' America's Newsroom falsely reported that "two federal agencies are joining the push to boycott Arizona" by cancelling "conventions" there. In fact, the Department of Education says it will be holding a conference in Arizona next week, and the Border Patrol said they did not cancel any conferences in Arizona. Read More

Fox absurdly claims ICE official doesn't "believe in immigration enforcement"
Fox News falsely claimed that new ICE official Harold Hurtt is "a sanctuary city supporter" who doesn't "believe in immigration enforcement," since he has expressed concerns about local police "in the field" enforcing immigration law, concerns that are widely held among law enforcement leaders. In fact, Houston under Chief Hurtt was not a "sanctuary city," according Fox's own definition, and he has reportedly said that in his role at ICE, "he will support local law enforcement agencies' decision to participate in any ICE program of their choosing, even if it involves questioning suspects on the street about their status." Fox News revives falsehood that Kagan "ke[pt] military recruiters off Harvard Law's campus"
Previewing Elena Kagan's confirmation hearing next week, Fox News repeated the conservative myth that she "ke[pt] military recruiters off Harvard Law's campus." In fact Harvard law students had access to military recruiters throughout Kagan's tenure as dean -- either through Harvard's Office of Career Services or through the Harvard Law School Veterans Association. Wash. Times compiles its distortions and falsehoods into one massive attack on Kagan
In a June 25 editorial, The Washington Times compiled the numerous distortions and falsehoods that have run on its opinion pages into one editorial headlined "The Case Against Kagan." Read More

Do right-wing media still trust Jon Kyl "implicitly"?
Many conservative media figures vouched for Sen. Jon Kyl's "integrity" after Kyl accused President Obama of having said he refuses to "secure the border" in order to force the GOP to support comprehensive immigration reform. Will these media figures report that Kyl now says his comments were "taken a bit out of context" and referred to "the president's base" and not the administration? Read More

Les Leopold: Why the Wall Street-BP Double Standard?

2010-06-25-capt.b1c4f1b6e51b4ee1bfa95506a7ba0add41ae6982ec8e439c97ff625b0c533f4a0.jpg

Les Leopold: The captains of high finance are demanding that we reduce public debt, which we ran up to bail them out and deal with the mass unemployment they caused. That takes a lot of nerve. First they crash the system and run away with a fat pocket of cash. Then they demand that we clean up our financial act or they won't loan out any money. Next time an oil-blackened snowy egret gets you furious at BP, remember to save some righteous indignation for the financial polluters who are picking our pockets. Click here to read more.

Our ability to respond to fast-moving changes in the global technological and demographic environment is hampered by chronic functional problems with the organization in charge, the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG).

Cenk Uygur: Lincoln Amendment or Bust

If the Lincoln derivatives amendment passes at least we and the economy have a fighting chance. Without it, the financial reform bill is a joke meant to placate us until the next collapse.

Mayhill Fowler: Seduction and Betrayal: McChrystal and the Misapprehension of Journalism

Journalism is an act of seduction. Many times I've done the seducing, in writing big stories and small; I've also been the seduced, slammed with the gut-wrenching morning-after upon reading stories written about me.

Sin -- defined as turning our backs on who God has created us to be -- can also take the opposite form of inordinate self-hate or shame, something that many LGBT people experience from a very early age.

Dr. Pamela Peeke: Swat Team to Aisle Three Please

Some public health advocates have singled out sugar as the primary cause of obesity and pointed an accusatory finger at sugar-sweetened beverages as the chief culprit for everyone being so fat. But is this singular focus misguided?

Lawmakers reached a final deal on a Wall Street reform bill early Friday morning after Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) agreed to a compromise with House Democrats on her derivatives regulation bill – clearing the way for the broadest rewrite of the nation’s financial regulations since the Great Depression. The legislation would create a powerful new consumer financial protection bureau, limit the fees debit-card companies can charge merchants, give the government the power to break up failing financial firms and force transparency of the massive derivatives market.

William Bradley: McChrystal: Right Man, Wrong Mission

William Bradley: When President Obama picked Stanley McChrystal to be his general in Afghanistan, I thought he picked the right man for the right mission. He had exactly the right skill set and experiences for that fundamentally counter-terrorist mission. Instead, Obama had something much more conventional, not to mention massive, in mind. Nation-building, like we tried in Vietnam, cast in the guise of counter-insurgency. McChrystal embraced it. Who knows what he really thought? Click here to read more.
