Fox & Friends crops economic adviser's comments to claim "mixed messages" on recession
On Fox & Friends, guest host Peter Johnson Jr. said there is an "amazing disconnect" between White House economic advisers Christina Romer and Larry Summers over whether or not the recession is over, after he aired clips of Summers saying that "everybody agrees that the recession is over" and Romer saying that, in her mind, "of course" the recession is not over. However, Fox & Friends omitted the part of Romer's comments in which she said we've "reached" the end of the recession according to "the official definition," "at least in terms of GDP" -- a statement that is consistent with Summers' remarks. Fox & Friends off the rails on claim that stimulus money went to "save" Napa wine train
Trumpeting a report by Sen. John McCain and Sen. Tom Coburn on "wasted" stimulus funds, Fox & Friends hosts Steve Doocy, Gretchen Carlson, and Peter Johnson Jr. repeatedly claimed that $54 million in stimulus money went to "save" a wine-tour train in Napa Valley, when in fact, the funds are for an Army Corps of Engineers project "designed to minimize flooding of downtown Napa," which requires the relocation of the Wine Train. In return to Jennings beat, FoxNews.com's Lott rehashes book smear
In an article headlined "Obama's Safe Schools Czar Tied to Lewd Readings for 7th Graders," FoxNews.com's Maxim Lott reported that Department of Education official Kevin Jennings "is under fresh attack after it was revealed that the pro-gay group he formerly headed recommends books his critics say are pornographic." But Lott did not note until the 13th paragraph of his article that the list of books recommended by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) for grades 7-12 included the disclaimer that they "contain mature themes" and the recommendation that "adults selecting books for youth review content for suitability"; moreover, at least two of the "critics" cited by Lott have a history of anti-gay bigotry. Quick Fact: Rove baselessly claims stimulus package "impeded" the economic recovery
On The O'Reilly Factor, Fox News contributor Karl Rove baselessly claimed that "the stimulus bill was not stimulative" and that he thought Obama's policies "impeded the recovery." But the Congressional Budget Office estimated that stimulus spending through September had saved or created as many as 1.6 million jobs and added as much as 3.2 percent to U.S.gross domestic product. Hannity lets Bachmann advance dubious claim that Christina Romer projected "5.5 million jobs lost" under health care bill

Media Matters for America

Hannity lets Bachmann advance dubious claim that Christina Romer projected "5.5 million jobs lost" under health care bill

On his Fox News show, Sean Hannity allowed Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) to baselessly claim that health care reform would "mean 5.5 million jobs lost and that's according to his own economist, Christina Romer." Hannity and Bachmann cited no evidence to support the claim, which Politifact has called false and "problematic"; the claim is further undermined by Romer's prediction that health care reform "would allow lower unemployment in the short and medium run."

Bachmann: "President Obama's bill will mean 5.5 million jobs lost, and that's according to his own economist, Christina Romer"

From the December 14 edition of Fox News' Hannity:
BACHMANN: We need bipartisan reform, and we Republicans are there ready, willing, and able. We want bipartisan reform. Let's scrap what we have and let's move forward, because President Obama's bill will mean 5.5 million jobs lost, and that's according to his own economist, Christina Romer.
HANNITY: Congresswoman, you have the distinction of being the second-most hated Republican woman in the country. And I --
BACHMANN: Or second-most loved.
HANNITY: Or the second-most loved. That's fair enough. Does it bother you, all the heat and the criticism you've been taking?

No evidence that Romer ever claimed health care reform would "mean 5.5 million jobs lost"

Politifact: Claim is "problematic and contrary to how Obama's economic adviser said the model should work." According to PolitiFact.com:
Obama's economic adviser -- Christina Romer, chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers -- has never said that a tax in the health care bill would cost up to 5.5 million jobs. Republicans have used her 2007 research to develop a calculation for job losses for any type of tax increase. If you have a number for tax revenues generated, then this model will give you a number of jobs lost. But there are factors that make this type of analysis troublesome when it comes to the health care bill. Romer's 2007 research, for example, said that tax increases that fund spending for social programs tend to balance out, and economic growth stays on an even keel. Another problem is that the Republicans take tax increases that happen over 10 years and treat them as if they happen in one year, which inflates the numbers of jobs that might be lost. Finally, this particular Republican analysis includes more taxes than just the surtax of page 336; it also includes the employer mandates of page 313. We find this analysis to be problematic and contrary to how Obama's economic adviser said the model should work. [PolitiFact.com, 11/4/09]
Romer: "Health care reform is an economic necessity." In a June 2, 2009, op-ed, Romer wrote:
Health care reform is more than a social imperative -- it is an economic necessity. A new study by the President's Council of Economic Advisers demonstrates that the current American health care system is on an unsustainable path. Without health care reform, American workers and families will continue to experience eroding health care benefits and stagnating wages caused by the pressure of escalating health insurance premiums. And without reform, rising spending on Medicare and Medicaid will lead to massive and unsustainable Federal budget deficits. [Romer op-ed, Yahoo! News, 6/2/09]
Romer: Health care reform will "allow lower unemployment." Romer also wrote in her op-ed, "Controlling health care cost growth would allow lower unemployment in the short and medium run, without putting pressure on inflation. Employment could be 500,000 higher for a number of years." [Romer op-ed, Yahoo! News, 6/2/09]

Quick Fact: RedState's Erickson again advances smears of Jennings
In an attack against Department of Education official Kevin Jennings, RedState.com's Erick Erickson again advanced the repeatedly debunked falsehood that Jennings "encouraged a sexual relationship between a boy and an adult" and the smear that Jennings "supports NAMBLA." Read More
Quick Fact: On Fox, Rove falsely suggests Obama is responsible for entire FY09 deficit
Fox News contributor Karl Rove asserted, "Since President Obama came to office, the federal deficit has grown by $1.46 trillion," falsely suggesting that Obama is responsible for the entirety of the increased deficit. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office, which calculated that the government recorded a $1.4 trillion deficit in fiscal 2009, projected before Obama took office that the deficit for fiscal 2009 would be $1.2 trillion. Wash. Post lets Palin mislead readers on climate change
On December 9, The Washington Post published an op-ed by Sarah Palin calling on President Obama to boycott the Copenhagen conference, which advanced several debunked claims about what recently stolen emails from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia "reveal" about the scientific consensus on man-made climate change, including the claims that climate scientists "manipulated data to 'hide the decline' in global temperatures, and tried to silence their critics by preventing them from publishing in peer-reviewed journals." Palin also claimed that "we can't say with assurance that man's activities cause weather changes." Read More
Special Report, Washington Times insinuations about DeParle's tenure at health care corporations undermined by facts
On the December 8 broadcast of Fox News' Special Report, host Bret Baier cited a misleading Washington Times article to report that "five firms" for which White House Office for Health Reform director Nancy-Ann DeParle had previously worked "were accused of things such as overcharging Medicare and failing to warn patients of the dangers of their products." In fact, of the companies The Washington Times cited as having legal issues, two apparently do not involve formal allegations of wrongdoing and in one, all of the activities resulting in legal action occurred prior to DeParle's tenure with the company. Gateway Pundit falsely suggests Jennings' organization handed out explicit safe-sex booklet to children
The Gateway Pundit blog falsely suggested that the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, a group founded and formerly headed by Department of Education official Kevin Jennings, had distributed to children an explicit safe-sex booklet. In fact, a community health group -- not GLSEN itself -- reportedly said that it had mistakenly "left about 10 copies" of the booklet on an informational table it rented at a 2005 GLSEN conference at Brookline High School in Massachusetts; the group reportedly apologized for doing so; GLSEN stated that if it had known the booklets had been at the conference, it would have demanded they be removed; and the Brookline school superintendent reportedly said he believed no students had actually taken the book. Hacked: Word of emails' theft quickly spread from blogs of climate-change skeptics to right-wing political blogs
After hackers reportedly stole emails from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU), word of the criminal breach and use of the emails to attempt to undermine the overwhelming consensus on global warming moved from the blogs of climate-change skeptics, where links to the emails were originally posted by anonymous commenters, to foreign media outlets and right-wing political blogs. Media Matters for America tracks the story's movement across the Internet, which took less than two days and culminated in a call by Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) for an investigation into "the IPCC and on the United Nations on the way that they cooked the science to make this thing look as if the science was settled." Read More
Wash. Times continues its relentless campaign against Jennings
In the latest of an obsessive series of editorials vilifying Department of Education official Kevin Jennings, The Washington Times again advanced discredited attacks to assert that Jennings is "unfit to serve as a senior presidential appointee". The editorial falsely claimed that Jennings encouraged a sexual relationship between a student and adult, attempted to tie Jennings to the North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), and falsely suggested that Jennings supported a controversial workshop at a 2000 event sponsored by the group he founded, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). Fox abortion coverage again reveals blurred lines between network's "news," "editorial" programming
On both Fox News' Happening Now - which the network states is a "news" program - and Fox & Friends -- which Fox News considers "editorial" programming -- Fox News hosts prompted Sen. Orrin Hatch to falsely claim that the amendment he co-sponsored with Sen. Ben Nelson is an attempt to "just put the Hyde amendment" -- which forbids the use of federal funds for abortions except in cases of life endangerment, rape or incest - into the Senate health care reform bill. In fact, the bill already explicitly prohibits the use of federal funds to provide coverage for abortions that are not allowed under the Hyde Amendment, and the Hatch/Nelson amendment would restrict funding of abortion beyond the Hyde restrictions; the Hatch interviews thus again demonstrate how Fox's "news" programs echo the same falsehoods and GOP talking points as their "editorial" programming. Human Events falsely claims EPA's Carlin a "scientist" who was "silenced," links him to CRU email "scandal"
Human Events' Jed Babbin falsely claimed that Alan Carlin - who Babbin called a "leading EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] scientist" - had been "silenced" because "EPA regulators refused to consider" his report "rejecting the theory that emission of greenhouse gases causes global warming," and compared this "coverup" to the "scandal" over the purported contents of emails stolen from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU). In fact, Carlin is an economist, not a scientist; both Carlin and climate scientists have pointed to "flaws" in his report; the EPA nonetheless reportedly stated that his report had been reviewed for use in their final report; and Carlin is indeed listed among the "authors and contributors" of that final report. Breitbart's headline falsely claimed Gore "admit[ted]" temps cause CO2 increases but "not the other way around"
A headline at Andrew Breitbart's website Breitbart.tv falsely claimed that Al Gore admitted that "temperatures cause CO2 to increase not other way around." In fact, in Gore's 2007 congressional testimony that Breitbart highlighted, Gore acknowledged that temperature increases have occasionally preceded CO2 increases, but also that "[t]he opposite has also been true in the past"; moreover, Breitbart omitted Gore's ensuing comments, which reflect the overwhelming scientific consensus on global warming, that "what's happening now is that we because of human action are overwhelming all of those cycles." Right wing smears scientific consensus on global warming as a "cult"
Following the release of reportedly stolen emails from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia, numerous right-wing media figures have attempted to undermine the case for action against global climate change by comparing the scientific consensus that human activity is driving global warming to a "cult." However, as the Union of Concerned Scientists has stated, the scientific understanding of climate change is "based on the work of thousands of scientists from hundreds of research institutions" and "[t]he e-mails provide no information that would affect" this understanding. The end of the Wash. Times and Rev. Moon's right-wing charity
You'd think that somebody with a direct line to the Almighty, and tapped by Jesus to save mankind on Earth, would be able to come up with a better business plan for running a daily newspaper. But, alas, after nearly three decades of unrelenting financial losses, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, a federal tax cheat, accused cult leader, and founder of the Unification Church, has decided to pull out. Actually, according to news reports, it's more like Moon's U.S. college-educated sons, as part of an internal family power struggle, have decided to finally cut off the endless stream of Asian church cash that's kept The Washington Times afloat. Investigation confirms: No evidence of illegal actions by ACORN in videographer scam
After media outlets and figures have repeatedly claimed that videos released by conservative activists James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles revealed a pattern of ACORN aiding efforts to evade taxes on a fictitious child-prostitution ring, an investigation by former Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger (D) found that "there is no evidence that action, illegal or otherwise, was taken by any ACORN employee on behalf of the videographers." Indeed, an analysis of those incidents by Media Matters for America indicates that in at least six of the eight videos released, ACORN employees at those offices either were not clearly informed that underage prostitutes were involved, refused to help, appeared to deliberately respond with wildly over-the-top statements, or contacted the police after Giles and O'Keefe had left; moreover, ACORN employees at at least two of the offices advised Giles to file tax returns. CBS advances email distortion to claim that scientists "manipulate[d]" data to get "the answer they wanted"
A CBS Evening News report on emails reportedly stolen from the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU) claimed that an email reference to a "trick" to "hide the decline" showed that scientists had "manipulate[d] some research" in order to get "the answer they wanted." Numerous scientists have stated that the "trick" of hiding the decline is a legitimate method to compensate for unreliable tree-ring data after 1960 and that the email in question has been distorted; moreover, several climate scientists have emphasized that the distortions of illegally obtained emails in no way undermines the overwhelming consensus on global warming. NY Post distorts EPA finding to suggest it is not supported by sound science
In a December 8 editorial, the New York Post distorted quotes from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) December 7 greenhouse gas endangerment finding to suggest that the decision is not based on reliable science, but rather on the "judgment" of EPA administrator Lisa Jackson. In fact, the full context of the quotes the Post cited makes clear that they do not support the editorial's claim that the EPA finding did not rely on scientific justification. Read More
Washington Times continues anti-gay war on Kevin Jennings, "Obama's buggery czar"
The Washington Times continued its anti-gay war on Department of Education official Kevin Jennings in a December 8 editorial entitled "Obama's buggery czar," the paper's ninth editorial smearing Jennings since late September. The Times editorial advanced several false and misleading claims in order to paint Jennings as a "moral malefactor" who supported and promoted "kids having sex with adults" as well as "homosexuality and promiscuity." Quick Fact: Fox & Friends continues to misinform on stolen CRU emails
Continuing its pattern of misinforming about climate change and about emails reportedly stolen from the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (CRU), on December 8, Fox & Friends hosted Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) to attack the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over its recent announcement that it will regulate carbon dioxide. Inhofe linked the EPA's announcement to "climate-gate" and claimed without challenge that EPA's decision --which co-host Steve Doocy initially described as a "sneaky way" to regulate carbon dioxide-- is "totally based on [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] IPCC science which is what has been debunked now, officially." Fox News contributor Karl Rove claimed that an Obama administration proposal to send $250 checks to senior citizens was spurred because seniors are "angry about Medicare cuts that the administration's proposing." Beck attacks health care reform with smears of Creamer, hypocritical outrage, and obligatory conspiracy theories
In repeated attacks on health care reform efforts, Glenn Beck falsely claimed that progressive activist Robert Creamer was imprisoned for "ripping off the non-profit entity that he's working for" - but the presiding judge reportedly said Creamer's motivation was to actually keep his non-profit alive, not steal from them. While attacking "convicted felon" Creamer, Beck further displayed selective and hypocritical outrage: Beck's Fox News colleague is felon Mark Fuhrman, and Beck's program runs advertisements featuring Watergate felon G. Beck smears judge as "corrupt" for not recusing himself in Creamer case -- but prosecution reportedly didn't voice concerns
Glenn Beck charged that late U.S. District Judge James Moran was "corrupt" because he failed to recuse himself in a case involving progressive activist Robert Creamer, who has been the subject of frequent smears by Beck. Fox's Rosen advanced misleading claim scientists destroyed climate data
On the December 8 edition of Fox News' Special Report, correspondent James Rosen advanced the claim that "climate-gate" revealed that "some leading proponents of global warming [...] destroyed" raw temperature data. In fact, according to the scientists, the raw data is still available at the meteorological services where they obtained it and Climate Research Unit director Phil Jones said the CRU simply did not keep copies for "less than 5 percent of its original station data" in its database because those "stations had several discontinuities or were affected by urbanization trends."
