Hannity falsely claimed Obama has proposed UK-style nationalized health care

The AP reported on Republican opposition to Tim Geithner's proposal to allow the government to take over failing nonbank financial institutions, without noting that House Republicans themselves proposed giving the federal government authority to take over financial institutions. Read More
Michael Reagan falsely claimed Dems' law told AIG to "pay the bonuses"
Michael Reagan falsely claimed that in paying retention bonuses, AIG was following a law "that was written by the Democrats" that said "pay the bonuses." In fact, the stimulus bill did not create the right for AIG -- or any company -- to pay bonuses, much less require them to do so. Read More

Fox News' Trace Gallagher and Shannon Bream advanced the claim, touted by "gun advocates," that the "vast majority" of weapons used in Mexican drug cartels "are not coming from the United States." In fact, according to ATF's National Tracing Center, 90 percent of these weapons that could be traced originated from within the U.S. Read More
Hill piece, touted by Drudge, advanced Gregg's false comparison between "debt levels" of U.S., EU members
A blog post at The Hill -- linked to by the Drudge Report -- reported that Sen. Judd Gregg argued President Obama's budget would lead to a higher national debt and annual deficits than the EU allows its member states. But The Hill did not mention that the U.S. national debt had already exceeded the EU threshold before Obama even took office, that some EU member states currently have deficits or national debts that exceed EU threshold levels, or that EU rules governing deficits include exemptions for circumstances such as "a severe economic downturn." CNN's Keilar, caption falsely claimed Geithner's financial takeover request was "unprecedented"
CNN correspondent Brianna Keilar, along with several other CNN correspondents and hosts and instances of CNN on-screen text, described Timothy Geithner's proposal for Congress to pass legislation allowing the federal government to take over failing nonbank financial institutions as "unprecedented." witch doctors (unbelievable)

National Republican Senatorial Committee
Dear Republican Friend,
I just received an unbelievable email from Claire "lean to the left" McCaskill, the DSCC's latest pitchman for failed policies.
In it she calls Republicans "naysayers" for asking hard questions about the higher taxes and runaway federal spending currently before the Senate.  She even calls Obama's dangerous plans a "bold prescription" for America.
I and my Republican colleagues think many of Obama's "cures" are worse than the disease.   His budget "cure" will cost taxpayers $9,300,000,000,000.00.  This irresponsible spending will ail taxpayers for generations to come.  It's now time to let our side be heard.
Your immediate contribution is more important now than ever.  In just 5 days, we need to report what we've raised this quarter, and it's imperative that we have a good showing so the Democrats know we're serious about winning in November.  It's never too early to start fighting, especially when you consider the facts.
  1. The Democrats are pulling out all the stops - offering to double contributions and send free car magnets to anybody who donates.  That's typical liberal politics - bribing people for their support.
  2. Obama has the "bully pulpit" of the White House, and his surrogates in Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi - who are out of touch with American values.
  3. The Democrat Senate Committee is in deep debt - and they're getting desperate.
This last reason is maybe the most important.  Last month we matched the DSCC in fundraising - and we paid down our campaign debt.  The sooner we can retire our campaign debt, the more resources we will be able to commit to getting the truth out about our candidates and our message.
You already know how critical funding is to our mission.  Getting the truth out about Obama's plans while supporting our candidates is the most important thing we can do.  And that message is powered by television, radio, and online advertising.
Our success next November relies upon your generosity today.
Please help us win back our Senate majority by making a secure online contribution right now.  Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
John Cornyn
Senator John Cornyn

P.S. Last month, we matched the Democrats' fundraising and helped pay down our debt.  The generosity of friends like you helped strengthen our financial position.  The more money we raise the more effective our efforts will be.  Do your part for the NRSC to have a good FEC reporting in just 5 days by making a secure online contribution right now.  Thanks again.

NBC Nightly News ignores Goolsbee rebuttal in reporting GOP "power grab" attack
Reporting that Tim Geithner and Ben Bernanke appeared before a House committee hearing "with a request for more authority that some critics are already calling a power grab," NBC's Kelly O'Donnell did not note White House economic adviser Austan Goolsbee's response that had "we had resolution authority now, we could have dealt with the issue of bonuses." Fox's Carlson repeated executive pay claim that Gibbs told her was false the day before
Fox & Friends' Gretchen Carlson falsely claimed that the Obama administration advocates regulating "executive pay at any financial institution." In fact, restrictions on employee compensation would be placed only on "financial institutions that are receiving government assistance." Read More
Suggesting inconsistency on Obama's part, Todd expands on his flawed "sacrifice" analogy
Referring to a question he asked at President Obama's press conference, on Morning Joe, Chuck Todd suggested Obama was being inconsistent in not asking the American people for sacrifice -- during a recession, with millions recently unemployed -- after having criticized President Bush for failing to ask for sacrifice following 9-11. Fox's Cavuto, Baier repeat falsehood that Employee Free Choice Act would eliminate secret ballot
Neil Cavuto and Bret Baier falsely claimed that the Employee Free Choice Act would, in Baier's words, "do away with the secret ballot in votes to unionize." In fact, as The Christian Science Monitor noted, EFCA would give "workers a choice of forming a union through majority sign-up ... or an election by secret ballot." Read More
LA Times erased word "torture" in describing Obama nominee's criticism of Bush administration

The Los Angeles Times reported that State Department general counsel nominee Harold Koh "call[ed] a 2002 [Bush administration] memo justifying harsh interrogation methods a 'stain on our national reputation.' " But Koh has repeatedly referred to the conduct sanctioned in the memo as "torture" -- a word the Times did not use. Read More
Conservative media run with dubious SkyNews claim of Obama "teleprompt blunder"
Conservative media figures uncritically highlighted a SkyNews.com report that a "teleprompt blunder has led to Barack Obama thanking himself in a speech at the White House in a St Patrick's Day celebration." In fact, a pool report of the event released at the time indicates Obama was, in the words of the Telegraph's Toby Harnden, making "a good-natured and well-received joke" at the expense of Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen, who earlier in the event had mistakenly read from the teleprompter displaying Obama's speech. Important HIV Guidelines Update for Prevention and Treatment of Opportunistic Infections in HIV/Infected Adults and Adolescents.
Released by the Centers for Disease Control on March 23, 2009
Dear Fred,

Today (March 23, 2009), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) is posting online the 2009 Guidelines for Prevention and Treatment of Opportunistic Infections in HIV-Infected Adults and Adolescents: Recommendations from CDC, the National Institutes of Health, and the HIV Medicine Association of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (officially published April 10, 2009 as MMWR Volume 58, Reports and Recommendations No. 4). This publication will replace the draft version of the Guidelines posted electronically on June 18, 2008 at www.aidsinfo.nih.gov.  The purpose of this letter is to alert you of the dissemination of the Guidelines and to describe its content, as well as provide information on where to obtain copies.  A parallel version of these guidelines for HIV-infected infants and children will be forthcoming shortly under a separate announcement.

In the United States, the incidence of HIV-associated opportunistic infections (OIs) has declined dramatically, largely due to the advent of simpler, more potent, and less toxic antiretroviral therapy.  However, we should not be falsely reassured that OIs are soon to become a thing of the past. Despite declines in their incidence and major improvements in their prevention and treatment, OIs remain a leading cause of hospitalization and death for persons living with HIV infection. Because most of the existing clinical workforce was trained in OI management during an earlier era when these infections were more prevalent, it is critical that resources such as these guidelines be available for newer clinicians who may have had less experience with these infections but are likely to encounter them during their career.

These Guidelines are intended for use by clinicians and other health-care providers, HIV-infected patients, and policy makers in the United States.  They were developed by a panel of more than 140 experts from the U.S. government and academic institutions. These Guidelines combine and replace two separate MMWR publications: the 2002 Guidelines for preventing opportunistic infections among HIV-infected persons: recommendations of the US Public Health Service and the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the 2004 Treating opportunistic infections among HIV-infected adults and adolescents: recommendations from CDC, the National Institutes of Health, and the HIV Medicine Association/ Infectious Diseases Society of America.

The 2009 Guidelines address OIs that occur in the United States and five OIs that may be acquired during international travel.  Topic areas covered for each OI include: prevention of exposure, prevention of disease by chemoprophylaxis and vaccination, discontinuation of primary prophylaxis after immune reconstitution, treatment of disease, monitoring for adverse effects of treatment and disease, management of treatment failure, prevention of disease recurrence, discontinuation of secondary prophylaxis, and special considerations during pregnancy and with regard to immune reconstitution inflammatory syndromes. For each OI, a small group with subject matter expertise reviewed the literature for new information since the previous guidelines' publication and proposed revised recommendations at a meeting at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in May 2007. Following these presentations and discussion, the revised guidelines were further reviewed and approved by NIH, CDC, and HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).

The new Guidelines will be available on March 23, 2009, at: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/mmwr_rr.html (MMWR website) or http://www.aidsinfo.nih.gov/Guidelines/ (AIDSInfo website).

We could not accomplish this task without the collaboration of NIH and the HIVMA, as well as the many persons who volunteered to participate in the development of these Guidelines.  We hope you will find them a valuable source of information to maximize prevention strategies and to promptly recognize, accurately diagnose, and properly treat and manage OIs in order to ensure that HIV- infected patients continue receiving the highest quality care possible in the United States.

Sincerely,

Richard J. Wolitski, Ph.D.
