President Obama Is Right

The National Memo
--- Sponsored Email ---
Dear National Memo Reader:

The Republican Party leadership no longer seems to understand the very concept of fairness that is so central to the American way. We urge you to consider this message from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee about how you can help to stop the GOP's tax-cut bonanza for the favored few.

Sincerely,
Harold Itzkowitz
Associate Publisher on behalf of The National Memo Team

Friend --
President Obama is calling on Congress to pass the Buffett Rule, which would finally put an end to special tax breaks for millionaires.

Republicans in Congress and right-wing pundits are attacking President Obama's plan, which would ensure the wealthy pay their fair share. Will you stand behind President Obama's plan for tax fairness?

Help us reach 100,000 signatures in the next 24 hours supporting President Obama's plan to ensure millionaires pay their fair share >>

As President Obama said in his State of the Union:
"Tax reform should follow the Buffett rule: If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30 percent in taxes... In fact, if you're earning a million dollars a year, you shouldn't get special tax subsidies or deductions...

Now, you can call this class warfare all you want. But asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes? Most Americans would call that common sense."
We can move America forward and stop the Republicans' assault on the middle class -- but only if we have the support of each and every one of you. Add your name today to show your support for the Buffett Rule:

Mike

Rep. Jackie Speier: unEqual Pay Day
There is cruel irony in having Equal Pay Day fall on Tax Day. Women and men share the responsibility of paying taxes, but there is no sharing when it comes to receiving equal pay for comparable work.

Since the Fed wants to turn over a new leaf, why not ask for the transcripts of the meetings from 2007-2010? Let's just accelerate the timetable, and let everyone know what really went down at those meetings during the crisis of 2007 and 2008. And we got them. And we'll show you just what we got.

There is a new study out by a pair of political scientists saying that the current Republican caucuses in Congress are the most conservative in a hundred years. I think they are underestimating.

Monday's Daily Brief

Arianna Huffington: GPS for the Soul: A Killer App for Better Living
Monday, April 16, 2012
Arianna Huffington: Just over two years ago, at the 25th anniversary of DotCom in Washington D.C., I was asked to predict what the game-changing inventions would be in the next 25 years of the Internet. Mine was less of a prediction than a hope -- that one day someone would create an app that would gauge the state of our mind, body, and spirit, and then offer us the exact steps we would need to take to realign all three aspects of our beings. At the time, I was just thinking out loud. But today, I'm delighted to announce that HuffPost is at work on an app we call "GPS for the Soul." I hope it will be just the beginning of our journey to reconnect with ourselves, our creativity, our intuition, and our wisdom.

Marlo Thomas: Women on the Run: The Colorful History of Women in the Boston Marathon
Don't ever tell me I'm not "allowed" to do something. You can attempt to persuade me with logic. But forbid me from doing something? That's an invitation. And that's what I'll be thinking about on April 16th, the 40th anniversary of women running in the Boston Marathon.

THE BIG STORY, BY E.J. DIONNE
It's understandable if unfortunate that the controversy surrounding the killing of Trayvon Martin has polarized the country along both racial and ideological lines. But there is one issue that should not have any racial connotations: the urgency of repealing "Stand Your Ground" laws.

And leave it to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to speak the blunt truth about why these laws are dangerous -- and why the National Rifle Association keeps pushing them anyway. READ MORE

POLITICS
It's Tax Day, and and Republicans will force votes in Congress this week on competing tax plans that affect millionaires and smaller businesses. They know the proposals are doomed from the start.

But that doesn't matter to either party.

Their efforts, including a Senate vote today on President Barack Obama's "Buffett rule" proposal to impose a minimum tax on the wealthiest Americans, are more about pontificating than legislating, aimed at voters in November's congressional and presidential elections. READ MORE

NORTH KOREA
North Korea's new leader addressed his nation and the world for the first time Sunday, vowing to place top priority on his impoverished country's military, which promptly unveiled a new long-range missile.

Kim's speech was the culmination of two weeks of celebrations marking the centenary of the birth of his grandfather, national founder Kim Il Sung -- festivities marred by a failed launch Friday of a long-range rocket that generated international condemnation and cost North Korea a food aid-for-nuclear-freeze deal with Washington.
